A Smarter Approach to a Complex Environmental Challenge

Pharmaceutical Cleanup Pump

A CLEANUP YEARS IN THE MAKING

At a former pharmaceutical manufacturing site in the United States, decades of industrial activity left behind significant environmental concerns. Even after manufacturing at the facility had ceased several years earlier, impacted groundwater and soil remained, requiring extensive remediation efforts.

Remediating this property involved several corrective actions to address contaminated groundwater and other similarly affected areas. Groundwater treatment would also continue well after cleanup efforts were completed as part of long-term stewardship of the site.

In one portion of the project, the challenge became even more significant: affected groundwater and NAPL needed to be removed through a specialized horizontal well at a low pumping rate. That meant finding the right equipment suited to the precise well configuration and capable of delivering the steady, controlled pumping the application required.

FINDING THE RIGHT FIT FOR LOW-FLOW RECOVERY

Knowing what was required to make the process work, the project team turned to Blackhawk for a pumping solution that could handle the site's specific needs.

Blackhawk supplied an Anchor Electric® positive-displacement piston pump to remove contaminated groundwater and pure NAPL product from the site.

Designed specifically for low-flow pumping applications, the Anchor Electric uses an electric drive motor and reciprocating piston pumping action. Its operating characteristics made it well suited to the controlled pumping required for this project.

Meanwhile, the horizontal well required special consideration. While the system incorporated a specialized horizontal well beneath the affected zone, the Anchor Electric was designed to operate in vertical wells. It was paired with the setup to manage pumping at the site.

The result was a practical pumping approach tailored to the specific conditions giving the project team the controlled performance needed to meet the demands of the project.

PLAYING A PART IN LONG-TERM SITE GROWTH

The Anchor Electric became one component of a much larger environmental approach addressing the effects of more than a century of industrial use. Its role was focused but important: reliably remove impacted groundwater and NAPL while meeting the site's specific needs.

Over time, the broader cleanup efforts achieved a significant milestone. More than 57 acres of upland and wetland habitat were restored and preserved, while groundwater treatment and monitoring continued as part of the property's ongoing conservational management.

For a project of this scale, progress depended on finding the right solution for each individual challenge. Blackhawk's Anchor Electric helped address one of those challenges by providing dependable pumping where precision and low-flow performance mattered.

A SOLUTION DESIGNED TO KEEP PROGRESS MOVING

Complex environmental projects often come down to solving one challenge at a time. At this former manufacturing site, that meant finding the right pumping approach that would work for a unique set up and specifics operating requirements.

The Anchor Electric gave the project team a dependable way to keep that work moving forward, supporting the site's broader cleanup efforts and its continued progress toward a cleaner, more sustainable future.
