Pumping the Sump – Without the Biofouling

The Clean and Reliable Edge Pump Offers Ease of Maintenance, Draining for Landfill

When bio-growth on a competitor’s airlift pump rendered it unusable in a landfill sump at a remarkably clean, state-of-the-art facility in the Northeast, the nationally recognized landfill installed the popular Edge Pneumatic Piston Pump™ from Blackhawk.

Biofouling is unacceptable to the ISO-awarded managers of the privately owned 720-acre site, which receives an average of 4,750 tons of solid waste a day and is proud of its environmental management system.

The Subtitle D-conforming facility accepts household municipal waste, construction and demolition waste, and commercial office lunchroom waste. With approvals, the site also may accept manufacturing waste, wastewater-treatment sludge, processed infectious waste, agricultural and mining waste, virgin-fuel contaminated waste, and asbestos-containing waste.

There's an Air About It

Pumping is required to remove both leachate and gas-well condensate from a sump 20 feet deep with a three-foot well casing. Bio-growth on the old pump was a consequence of the airlift's design, which vents used air back into the well. The sump was constructed with a gravity drain, with a water column of 10 inches. The inhibiting down-well vacuum was negative 14.33 psi.

Why did the landfill choose the Edge to replace the airlift model? Like all Blackhawk piston pumps, the Edge features an above-grade reciprocating-rod driver, eliminating air-driven biofouling. The pump also operates independent of vacuum, a significant advantage over airlift pumps, which cannot operate under high-vacuum conditions.

A Cutting-Edge Solution

The rugged, reliable everyday Edge pump maintains low-flow stability of up to 5.0 gallons (18.9 liters) per minute. Because the drivers and controls are above the wellhead, maintenance time is far less and safer for workers. Pricing of the Edge is equivalent to airlift models.

At the landfill, the Edge's performance continues to be highly pleasing and clean, according to the site engineer.

Blackhawk pneumatic sump pumps are manufactured in several sizes and capacities. Electric sump pumps are available with an explosion-proof option.

Blackhawk produces pumps and accessories for landfills, remediation, offshore oil and gas platforms, and other uses.
